Drone Construction Services

Overview

Drones have the potential to revolutionize the construction industry by providing efficient, cost-effective, and safer ways to perform a variety of construction services. The drone industry will grow rapidly over the next few years, and all organizations involved in the construction industry will benefit from their use.

Skyhook Photography can provide quality imaging and aerial data collection with today’s cutting edge drone technologies. With aerial imaging and data, we can help construction companies track site progress more easily, and we provide the tools to share progress with investors and customers alike.

One of the advantages of using drones for construction progression reporting is that it allows for a more efficient and cost-effective way to document the progress of construction projects. Traditional methods of documenting construction progress, such as ground-level photography or video, can be time-consuming and expensive. Drones, on the other hand, can be flown quickly and easily, and can capture high-resolution images and videos of the construction site at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.

Another advantage is that it allows for remote monitoring of the site, which is particularly useful for construction projects where the construction site is remote to the property owner, allowing the owner to monitor progress without frequent travel to the construction site.

Construction Progress Reporting

Drones equipped with cameras can be used for construction progress recording and reporting. The drones capture aerial images and videos of a construction site, which are then used to create detailed and accurate documentation of the construction progress. This documentation can be used for a variety of purposes, including project management, quality control, and reporting to stakeholders.

Regular flights over the construction site can capture images and videos to create a visual record of the construction progress. This can be used to monitor the schedule, identify any delays or issues that might be affecting the schedule, and document the final result of the construction project.

Construction Progression 2D Model

A 2D model, or orthomosaic (sometimes Orthophoto), is a composite image created by combining multiple overlapping photographs of a site. It is similar to a Google Satellite image, except there is a lot more detail, and the image is probably more up-to-date than the Google image. The photographs are geometrically corrected (orthorectified) so that the scale is uniform across the entire image.

An orthomosaic image of the project can be created every week, every month, or other interval, as needed, to show the progress of the project.

Here we have an orthomosaic with a before and after slider showing the same site as a Digital Elevation Model which shows elevation information across the site.

3D Models

A 3D model of a site is constructed in a similar manner to the 2D, or Orthomosaic, model. A drone is flown over the site in multiple passes to collect overlapping images of the site. Specialized software is used to combine those images into a “point cloud”, which may be viewed with 3D software.  To create a decent 3D model, many overlapping images need to be collected – usually more than for a 2D model.

Click the “Play” button on the image at right. Once the model loads, use your mouse to spin the model around (left button), move it (right button), or zoom in and out (scroll wheel). Press “F” or click the double-headed arrow to view the model full screen. Press “F” again or the Escape key to exit full screen.

Time-lapse Photos and Videos

Time-lapse videos are a form of videography that involves capturing a sequence of still images over a period of time. These images are then played back in sequence to show a condensed version of a longer event process.

Drones provide a unique perspective, and can be programmed to capture images from the same location time after time. Once the images are captured, they can be processed using specialized software to create a time-lapse video.

Site Photographs

Skyhook Photography can provide both aerial and ground-based still photographs of your construction site.

Still photographs are widely used to document the progress of a construction project and to track changes over time. These photos can be taken from various angles and perspectives to capture the entire site, including aerial views, close-ups of specific details, and panoramic shots.

Aerial photographs are particularly useful in construction site progression because they provide a bird’s-eye view of the construction site and its surroundings. They can be taken from various heights and angles to capture the entire site and its surroundings, giving a comprehensive and accurate representation of the construction project’s status and progress.

Multiple still photographs can be taken over time, for instance, once a week or once a month, from the same location and then combined into a time-lapse video, showing changes over time.

Some of the purposes still photographs can serve include:

  • Record keeping: Photographic documentation provides a permanent record of the construction site, which can be used for reference and comparison purposes later on.
  • Quality control: Photographic documentation can be used to monitor the quality of workmanship and to ensure that construction is proceeding according to plan.
  • Communication: Photographic documentation can be used to communicate the progress of a construction project to stakeholders, such as the project owner, architect, or contractor. This can help to keep everyone informed about the project status and to identify any areas that need attention. This is particularly useful for stakeholders that are remote to the construction site.
  • Marketing: Still photographs of a construction site can be used for marketing and promotional purposes. For example, these photos can be used to showcase the progress of a new building or development to attract potential buyers or tenants.

360° Panorama Photos

360° panorama photos allow you to see the world around you in all directions. This view could be from just above ground level – for example, what you might see from your front door – or from 100′ above the ground, so you can see the surrounding area. This view could also be from within a structure so you could see what that inside of the structure looks like, even during construction.

Skyhook Photography can provide you with 360° panorama photos of your construction site.

Place your mouse cursor in the image to the right, then click and drag to spin the view around, or use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out.
